Competencies, Challenges, and Trends in Instructional Design

As the talent development field evolves and attracts a global pool of professionals with diverse skills and experiences, new questions arise: Have the competencies of instructional design (ID) changed? Should they change? How has ID evolved during the past few decades? Are instructional designers’ competencies keeping up with the pace of change?

Through a collaborative partnership between the Association for Talent Development (ATD), the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), and Rothwell & Associates (R&A), the R&A research team implemented a research study to investigate the proposed questions. The results from this study support three major findings, which participants will explore during this webcast:

  • The skills required in the ID area of expertise developed by ATD remain highly relevant in today’s evolving field.
  • Although technology is constantly changing, the challenges faced by instructional designers are less about technology and more about serving the multitude of varied learners, as well as maintaining momentum and a relationship with the subject matter expert.
  • ID has evolved during the past couple of decades, and there is an ongoing need to promote the value and understanding of the ID professional’s role in talent development.

Jessica  Briskin
Jessica Briskin

Senior Learning Design and Developer, Affiliates Risk Management Services

Jessica Briskin is the senior learning design and developer at Affiliates Risk Management Services. She earned a master of education in instructional systems from the Pennsylvania State University, and a bachelor of science in communication, management, and design from Ithaca College. Jessica has instructional design experience in corporate and educational industries, including K-12 and higher education as an adjunct instructor. She has been published in TechTrends and Performance Improvement Journal, and wrote a book chapter in Workforce Diversity in a Global Society. Jessica served as a researcher and author for this project.


Tutaleni Asino
Tutaleni Asino

Assistant Professor, Okalahoma State University

Tutaleni Asino researches, writes, and presents regularly on mobile learning, MOOCs, contextually appropriate learning technologies, comparative international education, indigenous knowledge, and the role of culture in the development and evaluation of learning technologies. He has experience in instructional design in the corporate and higher education environments, and has taught face-to-face and online classes at the university level. Tutaleni served as the lead researcher and author for this project.


Aileen Zaballero
Aileen Zaballero

Senior Partner, Rothwell & Associates

Aileen Zaballero is a senior partner at Rothwell & Associates and a dual-title PhD candidate in workforce education and development and comparative international education at the Pennsylvania State University. She has been a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance since 2009. Aileen recently co-authored chapters in Performance Consulting, Optimizing Talent in the Federal Workforce, Organization Development Fundamentals, and The Competency Toolkit, 2nd Edition. She served as the project manager and author for this project.


Kristopher Newbauer
Kristopher Newbauer

Director of HR Ops and Learning & Org Dev, Rotary International

Kristopher Newbauer serves as president of IACET. The organization advances the global workforce by providing the standard framework for quality learning and development through accreditation and conducting research in the continuing education and training field.


Ann Parker
Ann Parker

Community of Practice Manager, ATD

Ann Parker is manager of the Human Capital Community of Practice and the Senior Leaders & Executives Community of Practice at ATD. Prior to this position, she worked at ATD for five years in an editorial capacity, primarily for TD magazine, and most recently as a senior writer and editor. In this role, Ann had the privilege to talk to many training and development practitioners, hear from a variety of prominent industry thought leaders, and develop a rich understanding of the profession's content.
