ATD Research: Best Practices in Learning Technologies

ATD will release new research that will focus on innovative technologies organizations are using for learning. Topics to be covered include learning technologies, measuring the impact of learning technologies, and staffing. Yasmin Gutierrez, senior manager of learning experience at WM, along with Phil Rhodes, head of learning and leadership development at WM will talk about their experience with implementing and managing learning technologies. 

Some key findings from the study include: 

  • 72 percent of survey respondents said learning technologies were important to their organization's overall strategy. 
  • 79 percent of survey respondents used software (such as an LMS) to track employee learning.
  • 65 percent of talent development professionals or trainers had experience managing learning technologies.

Rocki Basel, Ph.D. joined the Association for Talent Development (ATD) in 2022 as the associate director of research. Before joining ATD, she was a researcher for other national membership organizations. Her research interests include workplace culture, employee engagement, mental health, and organizational communication. She has a Ph.D. in communication studies from Kent State University.

Phil Rhodes is a senior executive who specializes in leveraging the latest technologies and processes to drive large-scale transformational change programs that deliver multimillion-dollar growth across highly competitive industries such as technology, hospitality, and environmental services. This experience – coupled with his strategic leadership and relationship management skills – has enabled him to thrive as a growth-oriented executive coach and workforce development leader. He has specific expertise in crafting dynamic Learning and Development (L&D) solutions that enable data-driven decision-making and help employees reach their full potential. Today he serves as the Head of Learning & Leadership Development at WM, the largest environmental services company in North America, and is a frequent conference keynote speaker on topics ranging from organizational effectiveness, leadership development, change management, and learning trends.


Yasmin Gutierrez
Yasmin Gutierrez

Senior Manager of Learning Experience and Acceleration, WM

Yasmin Gutierrez has served in various learning and leadership development roles for over 15 years. She is currently responsible for leading the technology and data analytics strategies for the learning function at WM. In addition, she oversees the centralized learning creative team responsible for developing high-end learning deliverables such as videos, infographics, and interactive web-based solutions. She has a master’s degree in management with a concentration in strategic management and innovation from Harvard University – Extension School and is certified in Prosci’s change management.
