Horizontal development—building skills, expertise, knowledge, and competencies—is what people usually refer to when discussing leadership development. It is necessary, but alone it doesn’t develop leaders who can operate effectively in today’s ever-changing world.

Vertical development is less understood, often neglected, and more nuanced. It is critical for leaders to effect systemic change. Vertical development transforms who a leader is.
